The first glimpse of the memoir of two women who were held captive for more than 10 years in a Cleveland home has been released.

People Magazine released excerpts from the book telling the stories of Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry Tuesday.

“Our story is not just about chains, lies and misery. That was Ariel Castro’s world. Our story is about overcoming all that,” they say in their book, Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland, written with Mary Jordan and Kevin Sullivan, which goes on sale April 28.

DeJesus and Berry, along with Michelle Knight, were kidnapped as teenagers by Ariel Castro, a Cleveland bus driver who committed suicide in jail a month after his arrest.

They escaped from the home in May 2013.
