Last May the FBI, Strongsville police and other law enforcement agencies converged on SouthPark Mall in a role-playing drill to deal with the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Ten months later, the subject’s being discussed again in the wake of a threat by the Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab.

The group, which has ties to al-Qaida, is responsible for a 2013 attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that killed more than 60 people.

A video called for a similar attack at the Mall of America and other malls.

Local FBI spokeswoman Vicki Anderson says, “We are definitely taking this seriously.”

The management of SouthPark Mall declined an on-camera interview but issued a statement: “We are aware of the issue and take this and all potential threats seriously. As always, we will monitor events and work closely with our partners in local, state and and federal law enforcement.”
