There will be a lot of celebration and fanfare Wednesday when Heinen’s opens its long-awaited, full-service grocery store in the historic former headquarters of Cleveland Trust at East 9th and Euclid Avenue.

Folks who live and work downtown are excited.

Business owner Michelle Tomallo said, “It’s a big deal.”

David Robinson said, “They’re trying to make a place. That’s what downtown is all about, creating places.”

Downtown Cleveland used to be the city’s Central Shopping District, with multiple department stores and big-name retailers up and down Euclid.

That changed as more Clevelanders moved to the suburbs and took their shopping to new plazas and malls.

And more recent efforts to bring more shoppers downtown — Tower City and the Galleria — did not live up to expectations.
