While millions celebrate Black History Month, far fewer know that February is also National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

Each year, an estimated 1 in 10 American teenagers is physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

“Experts say 1 in 3 young people experience some sort of abuse in their relationship,” says MSNBC host of “NewsNation,” Tamron Hall.

Young girls between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest incidents of partner violence.

In a special segment on her show, Hall highlighted the organization Day One, which partners with New York City youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy and leadership development.

Hall is passionate about domestic abuse awareness after her sister, who she suspected was being abused by her spouse, was later discovered dead, face down in her pool.
