Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson wants to form a a recruiting oversight team, which would recruit women and minorities to the city’s safety forces.

Currently, the city does occasional recruiting during civil service testing cycles. The big change would be doing recruiting throughout the entire year.

The development comes just a month after The Investigator Tom Meyer revealed a wide gap between the percentage of black Clevelanders and black police officers.

City figures show Cleveland police, fire and EMS are at least 65 percent white in a city that is 53 percent black.

“We want safety forces that are reflective of the city,” said Assistant Safety Director Barry Withers.

Only 24 percent of the police department is black. The Fire Department is 18 percent black, and EMS is 26 percent black.
