Cleveland’s new gun law took a major step toward becoming a reality – approved by city council Monday evening – and is expected to be in effect by April 24.

The measure is expected to be signed into law by Mayor Frank Jackson in the next few days.

Cleveland Councilman Matt Zone explained the new law is designed to keep guns out of the hands of children and irresponsible adults.

The legislation has undergone several amendments and revisions over the last year and was approved by the city council’s safety committee last week.

Among the provisions:

  •     Require safe storage of guns
  •     Create gun offender registry
  •     Prohibit display, marking and sale of facsimile firearms that appear to be real weapons
  •     Require reporting of sale or transfer of guns to police if not a licensed dealer
