Moments after Danny Shelton was selected with the No. 12 overall pick in this year’s draft by the Cleveland Browns, the massive Washington defensive tackle, wearing a traditional sarong to honor his native Samoa, walked onto the stage in Chicago and wrapped his arms around Commissioner Roger Goodell, lifting the NFL’s big boss off the ground.
“I haven’t seen that before,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said. “The look of panic on Roger’s face was quite interesting.”
The Browns envision opposing quarterbacks having the same reaction to Shelton.
With the top two quarterbacks long gone, the Browns used the first of their two first-round picks on Shelton, a 6-foot-2, 339-pound run stuffer who should help a defense that ranked last in the league against the run in 2014.
