Beloved R&B singer Ben E. King, best known for the song Stand By Me, has died. He was 76.

The Telegraph reports that the soul singer died of natural causes, according to his agent. The BBCcites King’s publicist, Phil Brown, as saying King died on Thursday.

King rose to fame in the late 1950 with The Drifters, with songs including There Goes My Baby and Save The Last Dance For Me.

He found great success, however, after he went solo with Stand By Me, in 1961.

Fellow musician Gary US Bonds paid tribute to King on Facebook, calling him “one of the sweetest, gentlest and gifted souls that I have had the privilege of knowing and calling my friend for more than 50 years.”
