Dojuan Nettles, Jr. is just 7 years old, but his dad is hoping a training session Monday night on what to do when stopped by police stays with him for a long time.

“I don’t want him to feel defensive, or like he’s going to be harassed or shot or killed,” Dojuan Nettles said.

Nettles also said he didn’t have the opportunity to attend events like this when he was growing up, which is why he wants different experiences – and education – for his son.

“All my interactions and encounters [with police] weren’t positive encounters,” he said.

The training session, organized by the Cleveland chapter of NAACP, was held at the Cudell Recreation Center, where 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed by a Cleveland Police officer last November.

It tackled basic rights, which experts said most people don’t know as well as they should.
