“Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud,” she told us.

A year ago, one of our most colorful rainbows, poet and author Dr. Maya Angelou, left this world for good at the age of 86.

Though she transitioned from earth to eternity on May 28, 2014 Angelou’s memory and words of wisdom will live on in our hearts forever.

On this, the one-year anniversary of her death, EEW Magazine is featuring five of our top favorite quotes.

On success: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

On managing relationships: “The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

On responding to life’s circumstances: “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”

On bouncing back: “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies. You may tread me in the very dirt, but still, like dust, I’ll rise.”

On love: “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”
