Today marks the 35th birthday of tennis champion Venus Williams.

The former World No. 1, to her credit has 22 Grand Slam titles—seven singles titles, 13 women’s doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles—and two Olympic gold medals.

The revered athlete born in 1980 turned professional at age 14. Initially, Williams struggled, but in April 1997, the gifted player broke through into the top 100, ending that year ranked No. 22 in the world.

In 2000 Williams won her first two Grand Slams (Wimbledon and U.S. Open), becoming the first African-American woman to win a Grand Slam.
