VP Joe Biden at the casket of Former Congressman Louis Stokes:

From members of congress to members of the district he represented here for 30 years, hundreds packed Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland former Congressman Louis Stokes’ funeral.

Stokes passed away last week at the age of 90 following a brief battle with cancer.

The service featured remembrances of the man who was the first African American ever elected to Congress from Ohio in 1968.

Rep. Marcia Fudge, who holds the seat Stokes once held, spoke for the Washington delegation that included Vice President Joe Biden.

“No matter how many degrees he possessed, no matter how many world leaders he knew by first name, no matter how many presidents sought his counsel, he was the congressman for the present, the pauper, the passed over and yes the populate,” Fudge said.

Of the man he was, Fudge said, “if Lou Stokes is not in heaven, most of us can forget about it.”
