PJ Morton’s new album Live Show Killer is “part jam session, part church revival,” according to Billboard. But the church isn’t his platform these days.

The son of pastors Bishop Paul S. Morton and Elder Debra B. Morton is on the secular circuit and admits that, at first, his family wasn’t too thrilled about it.

“There was a little pushback,” admitted the 34-year-old GRAMMY®-winning songwriter, producer and musician in an interview with Essence.

They thought I was going to be a preacher, a pastor, at the very least, a gospel artist,” said Morton, who is also a keyboardist for pop-rock group Maroon 5.

Before trading in packed out sanctuaries for sold out stadiums, the husband and father of three got his start at Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, founded by his dad.
