The Grammy-nominated gospel singer talks about — and performs a song from — her new hit album, A Different Place.

Houston-based singer, pianist, and pastor Kim Burrell has taken the genre of “jazz gospel” and made it her own. Her love for music came almost instantly, as she took her first vocal solo with a church choir when she was just one year old. The daughter of a pastor and an evangelist singer, Burrell began her professional career singing with various influential gospel choirs in Dallas and Houston. Her recording debut came in 1995 with the release of Try Me Again on Pearl Records, and she took off from there. Throughout her career, she would work with top artists from both the gospel and secular worlds, including George Clinton, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Shirley Caesar, and Donnie McClurkin. Her latest album is the inspirational, A Different Place. When she’s not in the studio or on the stage, she’s preaching to her congregation at Love and Liberty Fellowship Church in Houston, Texas.
