A deadly weekend for home fires has the American Red Cross urging people to create safety plans at home.

“Without question, smoke alarms save lives,” said Tim O’Toole of the American Red Cross.

This week officials and volunteers will be handing out free smoke detectors while continuing their campaign to raise awareness.

On Tuesday, they will be going door to door in Madison Township and Cuyahoga Falls. On Thursday, they will be in North Ridgeville and on Saturday they will be in Maple Heights and Parma.

Their local model for addressing the issue is also being applied nationally at other chapters.

More information can be found at Redcross.org/neo. Anyone interested in volunteering can call (216) 431-3010.
