Mass shooting at Inland Regional Center:

The shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012, where 26 people, mostly children, died.

With the investigation still unfolding, much is unclear about the attack at the center for people with developmental disabilities.

We know there were two shooters: A U.S. citizen named Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, an inspector with the county health department that was hosting the holiday party. And Tashfeen Malik, 27 — who is either Farook’s wife or his girlfriend.

But we don’t know their motives. We also don’t know the identities of the victims, nor do we have a full accounting of how many were injured.

Rahm Emanuel rejects calls for resignation:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is facing the toughest challenge of his four-year-old administration amid protests over the way his city responded when a white police officer shot a black teenager 16 times last year.

After video of the October 16, 2014, shooting of Laquan McDonald was released last week, Emanuel asked the city’s police superintendent to resign Tuesday. Some activists and political opponents say that Emanuel, a three-term congressman and former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, should step down as well.

He insisted Wednesday he would not heed those calls.

Photo of unusual birthday cake goes viral:

When a woman’s trip to the grocery store to get a cake decorated goes viral, it’s usually for the wrong reasons. Not this time.

Over the weekend Lisa Aldrich posted to Facebook a photo of a birthday cake she bought for her sister at a Michigan supermarket, Meijer. The white-frosted cake is adorned with pink icing on the edges and a not-entirely legible “Happy Birthday Mandy” written on top.
