CNN projects Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to win the New Hampshire primaries.

With 9 percent of the vote counted, Trump is the projected winner with 34 percent, and Sanders with 54 percent, reports the cable news outlet.

Democratic candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who so far has 41 percent of the vote, is in second place. She urged voters to ignore the defeat.

Second place in the sprawling Republican field of candidates is less decisive, but Ohio Gov. John Kasich was holding onto the spot with 16 percent of the vote ahead of Jeb Bush who was in third place with 12 percent.

New Hampshire voters will make their choice in the first-in-the-nation primary election Tuesday in an effort to narrow the field of presidential candidates in the 2016 race.

Voting booths opened across most of the state at 8 a.m. ET. And if surveys of early voters prove correct, political outliers – Democratic Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Republican real estate mogul Donald Trump – hold comfortable leads over their adversaries.

But each faces a formidable opponent whose support is on the rise. For Sanders, that opponent is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. For Trump, it’s Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who outperformed the reality television star in the critical town of Dixville Notch. Kasich beat Trump 3-2 among Republicans early Tuesday, while Sanders claimed all four votes among Democrats, reports CNN.

Tuesday’s primary comes after last week’s Iowa caucuses where Texas Sen. Ted Cruz claimed the top prize and Clinton eked out a win over Sanders by a slim margin.
