Coloring isn’t just for kids! Plenty of adults are turning the page on daily stress, thanks to the popular trend. But does it really help you wind down?

Lydia Lowe picked up a couple of coloring books a few months ago for her teen daughters, Livy and Sarah, thinking it would be an alternative to cell phones and computers.

“I thought it would be a good break for them,” said Lowe.

But what she found was it became a way for her to connect even more with her kids and help keep the calm in their hectic lives. Then she got hooked.

“When they started doing it, I realized I hadn’t colored in so many years. So I tried it, too, and it was really fun and relaxing. So you’re not really thinking about anything else or concentrating on anything else,” explained Lowe.

“One of the founders of psychiatry used to recommend his patients color,” said Dr. Deborah Koricke.

According to the psychologist, adult coloring goes back to the 1800s. She says it’s a great way to destress and let your mind be creative.
