May 4 marks 46 years since four students were shot and killed by the National Guard at Kent State University.

The university is holding a commemoration event Wednesday, where Samaria Rice, mother of Tamir Rice, was the keynote speaker.

The commemoration’s theme this year centers around the Black Lives Matter movement, which is why students say Samaria Rice was asked to speak.

Tamir Rice, 12, was shot and killed by Cleveland police Nov. 22, 2014 at the Cudell Recreation Center.

Samaria Rice took the stage just before 2 p.m. She thanked everyone for having her there with them.
