It will be an emotional and maybe ugly fight. It could pit some of Cleveland’s leaders against each other.

And it will be played out at a time when the community is getting ready to welcome the Republican National Convention and preparing to discuss whether to renew a vital school levy and, perhaps, hike the city’s income tax.

The debate over a proposal to raise Cleveland’s minimum wage to $15/hour starting next year began Tuesday with passionate presentations by backers of the proposal appearing before Cleveland City Council’s Workforce and Community Benefits Committee.

Home care worker Monica Francis tearfully spoke of how difficult her job is and how hard it is to live on minimum wage.

Reverend Jawanza Colvin and former state lawmaker Nina Turner told council that backing the plan was the right and moral, if not the easy thing to do.
