Former Indianapolis Colts running back Zurlon Tipton died Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself at a car dealership outside of Detroit, reports ESPN.

Police say Tipton, 26, dropped a duffel bag he was carrying, which set off a gun inside. He was rushed to St. John Hospital in Detroit, where he later died.

Ex-teammate Matt Overton told ESPN Tipton was a “talented, hardworking player,” who had an infectious personality.

“He will always be our brother. He is family,” Overton said. “Today is a tough day for many. Prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

Tipton, a Detroit native, attended Central Michigan University, where he also played football.

On Wednesday, CMU’s football program posted a tweet highlighting one of Tipton’s best games, in which he rushed for 216 yards and scored four touchdowns against EMU during his senior year in 2013.

He was previously arrested on Christmas Day in 2015, after allegedly firing off a AR-15 rifle outside the Indianapolis home that belonged to his girlfriend. According to ESPN, Tipton and another man left a party after he received a text message that his girlfriend felt threatened by her ex-boyfriend.

Tipton and his companion drove to the woman’s house and parked in the driveway. Falsely believing the man was inside, he fired off a round in the driveway. He was charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
