When gospel recording artist Kurt Carr arrived in Oklahoma City, he wasn’t sure what to expect from the vocalists he would meet at a prominent church on the northeast side.

As Carr came to town to lead a long-running music workshop at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 5700 N Kelley, he thought of the 1994 hit movie “Forrest Gump” and the title character’s proverbial sweets.

“When you do a music workshop, I always say it’s kind of like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re going to get. But when I came in and heard them sing, I said, ‘Thank you Jesus!,’ because you’ve got some singers up in Oklahoma City,” Carr said, laughing as he spoke to the audience at the workshop concert.

The Oklahoma City chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America hosted Carr as guest clinician for its 45th annual summer music workshop June 20-23 at St. John.
