John Saunders, ESPN stalwart and host of “The Sports Reporters” has died. He was 61.

Colleague Hannah Storm announced the news on “SportsCenter” on Wednesday morning. The cause of his death was not immediately known.

A Toronto-area native, Saunders joined ESPN in 1986 and had filled a variety of roles, both as a host and a play-by-play man. He had hosted “The Sports Reporters,” a Sunday morning staple, since Dick Schaap’s death in 1991, as well as much of ABC’s college football coverage. Through it all, he performed with grace, composure and eloquence.

Beyond that, though, he was beloved, both in Bristol and out — ESPN president John Skipper called him “one of the most significant and influential members of the ESPN family, as a colleague and mentor.”
