Swimmers diving into Lake Erie from Northeast Ohio beaches are being warned of potentially dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a “beach hazard statement” that’s in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say the alert is in place as a combination of wind and large waves with rip currents and longshore currents can cause swimming risks.

“These swimming risks can create life-threatening conditions for good swimmers,” the National Weather Service states.

Swimmers in Cuyahoga, Lake, Ashtabula and Erie counties are advised to either stay out of the water or follow instruction from their local authorities.
