The school year is underway and districts across northeast Ohio are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

As teachers craft their lesson plans, security officers are mapping out strategy to help insure the safety and security of students and staff.

“We can’t believe we’re ever going to be immune from something bad happening,” said Jeff Pedicino, a former Solon police officer now in charge of Solon school security.

Pedicino says he uses tabletop exercises with police and fire and helps train staff on how to deal with a variety of potentially violent situations. He says a number of unannounced drills are planned throughout the school year.
