Ryan Lochte is a bro, a shining example of White privilege and entitlement. And while he might have been able to get away with some shenanigans in the United States, the Brazilian authorities aren’t having it.
According to CNN, Rio police have charged the Olympic swimmer with falsely reporting a crime. The police chief requested a letter be sent to Lochte explaining the legal process in Brazil, related to the charges.
Lochte will now be summoned to Brazil. He can opt to send a lawyer and is not required to appear in court.
Clemente Braune, of the Tourist Police in Rio, said, if convicted, Lochte, who is 32-years-old and far from “a kid” as some have tried to suggest, could face 1-6 months in jail. Other reports have said as much as 18 months. The judge could also choose to levy a fine instead.
Whether he’s sentenced to a fine or jail time, Lochte would have the opportunity to appeal.
