White House State Dinner: Batali’s Pasta, 2016 Politics To Chew On:

President Barack Obama’s final State Dinner Tuesday was a swirl of dolce vita diplomacy, Italian designer gowns and plates of Mario Batali pasta easing a bittersweet end to one of the presidency’s best perks.

The dinner marked an final moment for Obama to deploy the lavish displays of friendship afforded the US commander-in-chief. But it also symbolized an end to the stylish, celebrity-friendly era of presidential entertaining the Obamas ushered in eight years ago.

What We’ve Learned From The Hacked Emails Of Hillary Clinton’s Campaign:

The emails hacked from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta have offered an insight into the inner workings of the famously guarded candidate’s operation.

And it turns out, they’re not much different than the external ones.

Emails posted by WikiLeaks reveal a buttoned-up campaign that analyzes nearly every decision, mirroring Clinton’s reputation as a methodical and tactical politician. And secret transcripts of Clinton’s paid speeches behind closed doors on Wall Street have failed to turn up any positions widely different than what she says in public.

Suspects On Loose In San Francisco School Shooting:

The shots rang out, one after the other, outside San Francisco’s June Jordan School for Equity on Tuesday afternoon. At first, students shrugged off as a prank; that was, at least, until school officials triggered an immediate lockdown.

In the end, four students were shot in the parking lot of the small public high school, San Francisco Police Officer Carlos Manfredi told CNN.

How The Obama Era Gave Us A Dangerous Patriotism:

I was lecturing a friend one day about the need to vote when he countered with a question about my civic duty: Why don’t you ever stand for the national anthem?

An awkward silence followed his question and then he added: “I never asked why. I thought you had some feelings about America. I figured you had your reasons.”
He was right. Long before NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the anthem, I started remaining seated when it was played. I didn’t do it for attention or to protest. As a person of color, I just couldn’t relate to the America that the anthem rhapsodized. How do I love a country that doesn’t love my people back? Patriotism, I thought, was the language of white America; it didn’t speak to me.
