Two White South African men appeared in a Middelburg, South Africa courtroom Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and assaulting a Black man by forcing him into a coffin, the Washington Post reports.

Victor Mlotshwa alleges that about three months ago, Willem Oosthuizen and Theo Martins Jackson, one of them holding a gun, accused him of trespassing on a ranch. He said they forced him into a coffin and threatened to set him on fire.

The two suspects almost escaped justice, but they recorded a video of the assault, which surfaced recently on YouTube.

“He didn’t have evidence to prove what had happened, it’s only two weeks back that he decided to open the case,” Mlotshwa’s brother, Thobile stated, according to AllAfrica.com. “He didn’t think anyone would believe him.”

The case ignited the anger of Black South Africans, who are reminded of atrocities under apartheid rule.

The Economic Freedom Fighters Party organized a rally that drew hundreds of demonstrators outside the courthouse.

EFF issued this statement:

“This humiliation can be based on nothing else but his blackness, which means it is in actual fact a humiliation of Black people as a whole. They have called for mass protests at the ranch where the incident occurred.”

The judge postponed the trial until January. In the meantime, the suspects will remain in prison.
