‘Fences’ is already a Tony Award-winning play, but how will it do in the Oscar race?

The play first opened in 1987 winning the Tony for best play that year, and when they did a revival of it in 2010, it won “best revival” as well as best actor for Denzel Washington and best actress for Viola Davis. Playwright August Wilson has notoriously forbidden the attempt to bring ‘Fences’ to the screen unless an African American directed it. Luckily Denzel was up to the challenge. Wilson passed away in 2005, but he would have approved of Denzel as the director, as well as reprising his role with Viola Davis.
