After four people died from a house fire in Akron early Saturday morning, the Red Cross is partnering with Fire Departments in Northeast Ohio to offer free smoke alarms.

The partnership between the Red Cross and Fire Departments will provide and install smoke alarms free of charge to any resident who requests the alarms.

As part of man initiative called Operation Save-a-Life, valuable safety information will also be provided so residents can develop plans to escape from their homes should a fire occur.

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan helped launch the initiative earlier this year.

To request a home fire safety inspection and free smoke alarms:

  • Akron residents: call (330) 535-2030
  • Cleveland residents: call (216) 361-5535
  • Youngstown residents: call (866) 319-7160
  • Other Northeast Ohio residents: log onto redcross.org/neo
