The decision was determined by slim margin — 548 to 528 votes.
Following the recall, Norton issued this statement:
“I love the people of East Cleveland and it has been an honor to have served them. I believe in democracy and I respect the decision of the voters. The people have spoken.”
Recall Leader, Devin Branch, also issued a statement applauding the vote saying about Mayor Norton:
“The results don’t indicate his true lack of support among East Cleveland (residents)…Voter turnout was low. His support is less than 10% in the city.”
Norton was first elected Mayor of East Cleveland in 2009, and was re-elected in 2013.
Council will now work to select Norton’s replacement.
