Christian rappers are supposed to use their gift of lyricism to help slay devils. But one misguided artist ended up slaying a man instead.

Ryan Salandy, who was supposedly about Christ’s business, has been convicted of killing his producer. The 26-year old was sentenced to 18 years in prison for intentionally running over a friend during an argument about CDs.

Salandy was sentenced Monday in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County for the hit-and-run death of William McDaniel. Prosecutors said in a statement that Judge Anne K. Albright sentenced Salandy to 30 years but suspended 12 of those years.

Police have said Salandy produced some of McDaniel’s music and the two were having a contractual dispute when Salandy intentionally ran over McDaniel and fled. Police say a witness described Salandy’s car to investigators and Salandy’s mother called authorities and told them her son had been involved in a hit-and-run.

Cell phone records show that on September 24, 2015, Salandy sent McDaniel at least three text messages that clearly conveyed a mounting level of animosity.
