Even the rich and famous suffer and need solace, as Tyler Perry shows in Higher Is Waiting (Random/Spiegel & Grau, Nov.). The actor, author, producer, director, playwright, and songwriter grew up in New Orleans and was regularly beaten by his father and sexually abused by a neighbor. His Christian faith sustained and motivated him:
