Nearly 215 years after President Thomas Jefferson wrote about, “building a wall of separation between Church & State” the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is continuing to advocate for it.
According to Salon some controversy recently stirred up about saying a prayer to begin the Board of Commissioners meeting in North Carolina. Although elected officials such as President Donald Trump may have prayer in public with people it is not the same as what happened with this incident.
A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties on behalf of non-Christians felt as if some religions took precedence over others.
Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson along with several others wrote that, “the principle at stake here may be a profound one, but it is also simple. The Establishment Clause does not permit a seat of government to wrap itself in a single faith.”
Unfortunately for these council members they won’t be able to pray before these meetings, but can when they choose anywhere else.
