The President’s decision to use the bully pulpit to start calling political plays from the sidelines has brought the all-Trump, all-the-time mania that has raged through Hollywood, late-night talk shows and the arts, roaring into professional sports.
It was probably inevitable, given the way he has seized the nation’s psyche since his shock win in last year’s presidential election, that the most powerful man in the world would sooner or later turn his attention — and his volcanic Twitter feed — toward America’s most powerful sports league.
His decision to do so now, threatens not just to embroil the NFL in politics for years to come, but to reshape the experience of those who watch it.
Trump Administration Announces New Travel Restrictions:
The Trump administration has unveiled new travel restrictions on certain foreigners from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen as a replacement to a central portion of its controversial travel ban signed earlier this year.
The new restrictions on travel vary by country and include a phased-in approach.
“Making America Safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet,” President Donald Trump tweeted just after his administration released the details of the restrictions Sunday night.
Shooter Kills One, Wounds 7 At Tennessee Church:
A gunman opened fire at a church in Tennessee on Sunday, killing one person and injuring seven others, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said.
The Department of Justice and the FBI have opened a federal civil rights investigation of the shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, a neighborhood in Davidson County governed by Nashville.
The first call reporting multiple gunshots came in around 11:15 a.m. CT, police spokesman Don Aaron said. The gunman shot Melanie Smith, 39, as church was letting out before entering the church with two pistols and continuing to shoot.
Why Today’s Teens Are Taking Longer To Grow Up:
Teens aren’t what they used to be.
The teen pregnancy rate has reached an all-time low. Fewer teens are drinking alcohol, having sex or working part-time jobs.
And as I found in a newly released analysis of seven large surveys, teens are also now less likely to drive, date or go out without their parents than their counterparts 10 or 20 years ago.
Some have tried to explain certain aspects of these trends. Today’s teens are more virtuous and responsible, sociologist David Finkelhor has argued. No, says journalist Jess Williams, they’re just more boring. Others have suggested that teens aren’t working because they are simply lazy.
Hurricane Maria Sending High Winds, Surf Up East Coast:
The East Coast is bracing for high winds and treacherous surf from Hurricane Maria, days after the storm caused widespread devastation in the Caribbean.
North Carolina may bear the worst of the storm, as current forecasts show Maria brushing its coast Wednesday morning.
Although it’s not currently predicted to make landfall along the coast, Maria is the third hurricane to affect the US in the last month.
“It is likely that some direct impacts will occur along portions of the coast by midweek,” the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory Sunday.
Those on the Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts are warned to monitor the storm’s progress.
