In the month of October, HelloBeautiful is highlighting women of color who have been affected by cancer with our annual Faces Of Strength breast cancer initiative. Although incidences of breast cancer are slightly lower among Black women, the mortality rate for our community is disproportionately higher. This statistic can be credited to African-American women being less likely to receive mammograms and follow up care due to lack of health care resources.

Faces Of Strength aims to bring awareness to how breast cancer affects the men and women in our lives and to illuminate preventative measures that could save lives, effectively bridging the mortality gap.

This year’s theme, ‘Survivor’s Story’ profiles two women who were triumphant against their diagnosis. Stephanie Royal, opted for a prophylactic mastectomy (often referred to as the “Angelina Jolie”) to save her life. Iman Schuk, underwent a bilateral mastectomy after being diagnosed while breastfeeding her 4 month old.
