Words have power. And in a day and age where African-Americans—and those sympathetic to the plight of minorities—are called everything in the book but a child of God, an NFL owner is under fire for his disrespectful characterization of anthem protesters

Houston Texans owner, Bob McNair, was born in 1939, at a time when African-Americans weren’t considered equal and were oppressed by legally sanctioned racism.

The 79-year-old, who is both a Republican and major Trump supporter, has offended NFL players by characterizing their anthem protests as “inmates running the prison.”

“I regret that I used that expression,” McNair said in a statement, after the public outcry against his offensive rhetoric grew and several players considered staging a walkout reports ESPN.

“I never meant to offend anyone and I was not referring to our players. I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally,” continued McNair, trying to diffuse the fire he lit with his hasty tongue
