Five weeks after a storage tank failure destroyed 4,000 eggs and embryos at its fertility center, University Hospitals has replaced the center’s director.

On Tuesday evening, UH confirmed that Dr. James Liu will assume the primary lead over its fertility clinic lab. Liu is currently the chair of the hospital’s OB/GYN department.

Dr. James Goldfarb had been running the fertility center at Ahuja Medical Center as Division Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility since 2011. He will remain at UH and focus on coordinating all of the patient care at the fertility clinic. Dr. Goldfarb is credited with Ohio’s first in vitro fertilization birth in 1983 and the world’s first IVF/surrogate birth in 1986.
