Residents urged to flee ‘monster’ Hurricane Florence as it inches closer:

Hurricane Florence roared toward the Southeast coast early Wednesday as officials warned the more than 1 million people in its path to get out of the way or face its wrath.

“This storm is … nothing like you’ve ever seen,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said. “Even if you’ve ridden out storms before, this one is different. Don’t bet your life on riding out a monster

The Category 4 hurricane is one of the strongest hurricanes on the eastern seaboard in decades, the National Weather Service said. It’ll affect more than 300 miles of coastline, and bring dangerous storm surge and rainfall to parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states.

The woman who helped kidnap Elizabeth Smart will be released from prison:

Elizabeth Smart said Tuesday that the Utah parole board’s decision to release one of the people who abducted her was surprising and “incomprehensible.”

Wanda Eileen Barzee wasn’t expected to be released for at least another five years.
However, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole said it hadn’t credited her sentence in the state system with the time she served in federal prison.
As such, Barzee, now 72, will leave prison September 19.

The racist Serena cartoon is straight out of 1910:

What makes a bad editorial cartoon?

Mark Knight and some of his defenders will tell you the outcry against his Serena Williams cartoon, roundly criticized this week for indulging noxious racist imagery, are about “political correctness” or progressive silencing of dissent. Don’t believe that argument. It depends on the belief that people are incapable of making aesthetic distinctions. In an editorial, the newspaper defended his cartoon, saying it had nothing to do with race.

Nicki Minaj fires back at Cardi B:

Nicki Minaj said Monday her recent dust-up with fellow rapper Cardi B was “mortifying and humiliating.”

Minaj addressed the incident during the latest episode of her Beats 1’s “Queen Radio” show.
“You’re angry and you’re sad. This is not funny,” Minaj said of Cardi B. “Get this woman some f***ing help. This woman’s at the highest point in her career and she’s throwing shoes?”
The pair were leaving New York Fashion Week’s annual Harper’s Bazaar Icons party late Friday at the Plaza Hotel in New York City when Cardi B appeared to go after Minaj.

Steeling for Hurricane Florence, Trump seeks praise for Maria:

As he braces for Hurricane Florence, President Donald Trump is stoking new outrage over his refusal to accept any blame for the relief effort following Puerto Rico’s monster storm last year.

On Tuesday he insisted the operation had been “incredibly successful,” despite shocking new figures putting the death toll at nearly 3,000.
The President’s refusal to ever admit a mistake and to hype his own perceived achievements struck a jarring note, even as he tried to project a smoother response to the potentially historic hurricane bearing down on the Carolinas.
