Much of the focus has been on staffing, such as adding mental health professionals or school resource officers.
But there may also be solutions in how schools are built.
Turns out, there is no basic blueprint when it comes to building safer schools. But Jim Brewer with the American Institute of Architects believes there should be.
“We’ve heard from many local and state officials who are ‘Googling,’ frankly, after a school shooting or some type of violence in schools occurs, ‘What do we do?’” he said.
He is pushing for new legislation on Capitol Hill which would free up funding so that schools could have a place other than Google. It would be a kind of federal clearinghouse for designs.
“That school officials do not have the funding nor the access to credible information from one repository is disturbing,” he said.
Jason Horner, president of Safe Schools, Safe Kids, said some districts are turning to ballistic protection and paying as much as $10,000 per door as a security precaution.
