A transformer explosion turned the New York City skyline blue:

A transformer explosion at a power plant in Queens temporarily lit up the New York City skyline in a brilliant blue Thursday night.

But despite the eerily glowing color, an alien invasion it was not.
Instead, the light came as part of a brief electrical fire after a “couple of transformers tripped offline” at the intersection of 20th Avenue and 32nd Street in Astoria, Con Edison spokesman Bob McGee told CNN.

The issue caused a transmission dip in the area, and Con Edison crews responded with the Fire Department of New York, Con Edison said.

Government shutdown looks set to drag on to 2019 after House and Senate adjourn until next week:

The House and Senate adjourned Thursday after brief pro forma sessions and made plans to reconvene Monday, essentially punting any action to end the partial government shutdown until next week as negotiators remain far from an agreement.

The halls of Congress were ghost town-esque on Thursday, with the two chambers meeting for only a few minutes each. Only a few lawmakers presided over the brief sessions, while congressional leaders and rank-and-file members were almost entirely absent.
Rep. Mark Meadows, a close ally of President Donald Trump, told CNN’s Dana Bash that negotiations “have not progressed” over the past 24 to 48 hours.

‘Bird Box’ memes are a hoot:

Netflix’s psychological horror film “Bird Box” has had the internet chirping since its debut on the streaming service less than a week ago.
In “Bird Box,” Sandra Bullock stars as a woman who undertakes an arduous river journey to save her two children from a threat that has left much of the world in a state of chaos and resulted in mass suicides.
Some of the film takes place in flashbacks, as a pregnant Bullock finds a small group of people with whom to survive and figure out the new world order. They live in constant fear of being exposed to the outside world and strangers because encounters with either increase the risk of being affected by the mysterious force that has the power to drive people insane.
To protect themselves from it, they block out windows and wear blindfolds if forced to venture outside. Birds also serve as something of an alarm system

The referee who told a wrestler to cut his dreadlocks was investigated in 2016 for using a racial slur:

A referee who told a black varsity wrestler to cut off his dreadlocks or forfeit a match this month was the subject of a 2016 investigation that involved him calling a fellow referee a racial slur, according to a source from the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association.

Alan Maloney received a one-year suspension for the 2016 incident, the source said.
Because the incident did not occur at an athletic event, the suspension was overturned on appeal after the NJWOA ruled it has no jurisdiction over happened, according to theĀ Courier Post, a newspaper that covers Southern New Jersey.
Maloney told the newspaper that he did not remember saying the racial slur to his colleague. But he said he believed him and apologized to him.
