Ridiculously cold temps in the Northeast break records:

Even by New England standards, this winter cold is brutal.

The storm that killed several people in the Midwest — including a 12-year-old girl who died when a snow fort collapsed — left a trail of dangerously cold weather in the Northeast.
Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo declared a state of emergency in Newport County overnight and activated the National Guard, after National Grid cut gas service to more than 7,000 residents.

“If you are impacted by the National Grid gas outages in Newport and lack heat, please find alternate shelter,” she said on Twitter. “Tonight, will be one of the coldest nights of the year — it’s not safe to be in your home without heat.

Twitter suspends account that helped ignite controversy over viral encounter:

Twitter suspended an account on Monday afternoon that helped spread a controversial encounter between a Native American elder and a group of high school students wearing Make America Great Again hats.

The account claimed to belong to a California schoolteacher. Its profile photo was not of a schoolteacher, but of a blogger based in Brazil, CNN Business found. Twitter suspended the account soon after CNN Business asked about it.
The account, with the username @2020fight, was set up in December 2016 and appeared to be the tweets of a woman named Talia living in California. “Teacher & Advocate. Fighting for 2020,” its Twitter bio read. Since the beginning of this year, the account had tweeted on average 130 times a day and had more than 40,000 followers

MLK’s son criticizes Pence for invoking civil rights leader’s words in border wall push:

The son of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday criticized Vice President Mike Pence for citing the slain civil rights leader to make the case for a wall along the US-Mexico border.

On Sunday, Pence told CBS’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation,” in a discussion about ending the government shutdown which was sparked by a dispute about the border wall, that “the hearts and minds of the American people today are thinking a lot about it being the weekend we remember the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

GM responds to backlash after racism allegations: ‘This is not who we are:

General Motors is responding to consumers who are angry at its brand after a story on CNN about alleged widespread racism in its Toledo, Ohio, plant.

“We’re outraged that anyone would be subjected to racist behavior. We have zero tolerance for discrimination — this is not who we are. We’re working to drive this out of our workplaces,” GM’s main Twitter account wrote to several people on the social media platform.
The company responded to a variety of people tweeting their outrage about the allegations. Many were saying in comments to the automotive manufacturer that they would never buy a car from the company unless the atmosphere was fixed.

Patriots Fan Pays over $180K for 8 Seats to Patriots vs. Rams Super Bowl 53:

At least one New England Patriots fan is willing to drop plenty of money to watch his or her team play the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

According to Darren Rovell of Action Network, a Patriots fan paid $180,685.44 for eight seats at the 50-yard line for the game on Feb. 3.

At least the fan will be present for what could be Tom Brady‘s final Super Bowl considering he is 41 years old. The living legend led the Patriots to a 37-31 overtime victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game by directing a touchdown drive with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and again in overtime.
