Trump gets D-Day history lesson amid political turbulence:

European leaders are subjecting President Donald Trump to a crash course in history, hoping to use D-Day commemorations to shake his skepticism about alliances that have kept global peace for three-quarters of a century.

The President will see for himself on Thursday the human price paid by thousands of Americans buried under poignant, regimented rows of white gravestones overlooking the beaches they stormed under curtains of Nazi fire on June 6, 1944.

Their sacrifice in the Normandy landings helped purchase 75 years of European freedom and prosperity, and enshrined America as the leading world power and guarantor of Western democracy.

A 97-year-old vet jumped out of a plane to recreate his D-Day parachute drop:

For most people, a summer trip to France is a chance to relax in beautiful surroundings and to savor the country’s fine food. For Tom Rice of San Diego, it’s an opportunity to relive the time he nearly died jumping from a C-47 Douglas airplane, then was shot at, again and again.
Despite being 97, Rice climbed once more into the bone-rattling fuselage of a C-47 and, while flying over the Normandy fields where he first saw action in 1944, leaped into the unknown.
Those on the ground watched the anxiety-inducing descent as, strapped to another parachutist dangling beneath a stars and stripes canopy, the old man coasted through the sky, another gigantic American flag billowing out behind him

46 ice cream trucks are being seized in a New York City crackdown:

Shell corporations, millions in fines, and a sting operation in New York City. It’s not a noir film; it’s a crackdown on ice cream trucks.

The city began seizing 46 ice cream trucks Wednesday in “Operation Meltdown” after operators violated traffic laws and then evaded fines for nearly a decade, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news release.
As the operators were handing out popsicles from 2009 to 2017 they also were racking up 22,000 summonses and nearly $4.5 million in fines for traffic violations, the city said. The operators had been cited for running red lights, parking near fire hydrants and blocking cross walks, among other things, the news release said.

Steph Curry’s Brilliance Can’t Save Depleted Warriors in Game 3 Loss vs. Raptors:

The Toronto Raptors wasted no time seizing home-court advantage right back in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Toronto defeated the short-handed Golden State Warriors 123-109 in Wednesday’s Game 3 at Oracle Arena, handing the two-time defending champions their first home loss since the first round. With a 2-1 series lead, the Raptors are now two wins away from their first title in franchise history.

The Land of Immortals: How and what Japan’s oldest population eats:

You have probably heard that Japan consistently has among the highest life expectancy in the world and that the island of Okinawa has the greatest concentration of centenarians (people who live to at least 100).

I have long been fascinated by centenarians and the life lessons they have to share. But the truth is, I have never been sure I would want to live that long unless I could somehow be certain I would have a strong mind and body.
