Joe Biden gets in his own way on race:

Joe Biden can’t seem to get out of his own way.

His campaign started the day by defending his nostalgia for a more civil Washington — when getting things done meant working with segregationists on occasion.
His comments at a campaign fundraiser in New York Tuesday night drew swift rebukes from his Democratic rivals for president, drawing the controversy into the next news cycle.

The backlash Biden faces from his rivals is less about his record on race — he has long fought for racial equality — and far more about whether he truly appreciates the changes that have taken place in his own party during a career that began in the early 1970s. Biden harkened back to a time when even segregationist lawmakers were acceptable in polite company, but he is aiming for the White House at a time when such historic figures are viewed as abhorrent.

The shooting of baseball legend David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic left fans in his native country and the United States wondering the same thing:

Why would anyone try to kill Big Papi and think they could get away with it?
Ortiz was on a crowded patio at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo the night of June 9 when a gunman shot him in what Dominican authorities initially described as a murder-for-hire plot against him.
Ten days later, authorities revised their theory and said it was a case of mistaken identity. The real target, they now say, was Ortiz’s friend, Sixto David Fernandez, who was seated at the same table.

Philadelphia, St. Louis police departments roiled by racist and hateful Facebook posts:

The police departments of Philadelphia and St. Louis are taking action following allegations that officers posted hateful or racist content on social media. In Philadelphia, 72 officers were taken off the streets and placed on administrative duty, and in St. Louis, 22 officers have been barred from bringing their cases to the Circuit Attorney’s Office.

The social media posts were compiled by The Plain View Project, which describes itself as a “database of public Facebook posts and comments made by current and former police officers from several jurisdictions across the United States.”

‘Jeopardy!’ champion James Holzhauer donated to a cancer walk in Alex Trebek’s name:

James Holzhauer, the “Jeopardy!” champion who won 32 straight games, earning a total of $2,462,216, has donated a portion of his winnings to a Chicago-area pancreatic cancer walk.

And he did so in Alex Trebek’s name.
