This 4th of July, Americans are fighting over what ‘American’ should mean:

When President Donald Trump gives his military-themed “Salute to America” on Thursday, he’ll stand in front of the Lincoln Memorial, where the words of President Abraham Lincoln’s greatest speech, his second inaugural address, are etched in stone.

In that speech, Lincoln promised to heal the wounds of the Civil War “with malice toward none, with charity for all,” a political approach Trump hasn’t embraced.

For Trump’s speech, there will be American flags everywhere. Count on it. It’s not out of the question that he will sidle up and hug one, something he’s done before.

For every cupcake this 13-year-old sells, he gives one to the homeless:

You’ll find 13-year-old Michael Platt giving cupcakes to the homeless a couple times each month at domestic violence shelters, transitional housing and parks in the Washington area.

It’s not just cake he’s handing out; it’s a mixture of his top passions: baking and fighting inequality. And now it’s also a business.
“I figured there was an easy way to make a business out of something you are passionate about,” Michael said. “I knew I was more fortunate than others, so I wanted to give back.”
So at the ripe age of 11, Michael started Michaels Desserts. And no, there shouldn’t be an apostrophe, he points out, because it’s not about him, it’s about others.

A teen was accused of rape, but a judge didn’t want him tried as an adult because he ‘comes from a good family’:

In 2017, a 16-year-old boy in New Jersey was accused of raping an intoxicated 16-year-old girl in the dark basement of a house party. According to court documents, the boy filmed the encounter, the girl’s bare torso exposed and her head repeatedly banging against a wall. He allegedly shared the video with friends, and it continued to circulate for months despite the girl’s pleas for him to stop its dissemination.

At one point, according to documents, he texted friends: “[w]hen your first time having sex was rape.”

Meghan McCain, ‘miserable’ at ABC, mulls leaving ‘The View’:

Meghan McCain, feeling dejected and sabotaged by her colleagues at ABC, is seriously thinking about departing “The View,” two people familiar with the matter told CNN.

One of the people, who is a friend of McCain, and who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity, told CNN Business that McCain “doesn’t think it’s worth it anymore.” The friend added that McCain’s contract is coming up for renewal later this summer, though that timeline was disputed by a well-placed person at ABC.
A senior ABC employee who also spoke to CNN Business said McCain is “miserable” at the network.

A veteran-owned company releases a Betsy Ross flag shirt after Nike controversy:

A veteran-owned company is facing off against Nike again, this time over a Revolutionary War-era flag.

Nine Line Apparel, a Georgia-based company founded by retired Army Capt. Tyler Merritt, is releasing “Betsy Ross” flag t-shirts after Nike decided to recall shoes featuring the same design.
Nike was set to release a USA-themed Air Max 1 this week but, according to The Wall Street Journal, asked stores to return the shoes after complaints from former NFL star and activist Colin Kaepernick.
