The North Carolina A&T State University’s Fellowship Gospel Choir received a standing ovation from the packed pews Sunday night when they entered Selvia Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

No one had to prompt the audience to rise to their feet by the time they were finished. Many were already standing, with arms raised in praise or clapping to the beat.

The 30-voice gospel choir, joined by a band and praise dancers, sung, shouted and praised God for two hours — fanning themselves often between numbers but stopping only once for intermission.

That was exactly what Pitt County A&T Alumni Association President Freddie Outterbridge had in mind. The annual concert is a fundraiser for the local alumni association, with any money raised going toward a scholarship fund and other events.

“Do anything you want to do,” he said before the choir performed. “Want to show how good God has been to you? Tell Him! Don’t be afraid to stomp your feet, raise your hands.”

The more than 150 people attending took that advice. So, seemingly, did the performers. From slow, soulful testimonials to jumping, spirited praise songs the students kept moving and kept the crowd involved.
