Rather than helping those in distress find their way, Della Reese will be here to lift spirits with a concert filled with gospel, standards and blues.

“Oh, we’ll do it all,” Reese said of the Saturday concert at Del Webb’s Sun City in Palm Desert, from her home in Los Angeles.

For a time, the desert was a regular stop on Reese’s touring schedule.

“I’ve been there many, many times,” she said. “But I just can’t remember where it was I used to play.”

Back in the 1950s and ’60s, Reese followed a circuit that included playing clubs in Lake Tahoe, Reno and Las Vegas and stops in the Coachella Valley.

That she’s still performing is due to a greater hand guiding her life, said Reese, who is also an ordained minister.

More than a decade ago, Reese, who is 78, gave up singing to devote her talents to become a pastor.

“Last year, a member of our church asked me if I would entertain for a charity she was involved in,” Reese recalled. “Of course, I could not refuse her request. I didn’t realize how much I had missed (performing), either.”
