St Louis will again host the Memphis-Based Church of God in Christ’s holy convocation in 2011, and the Convention and Visitors Commission expects it to again be the biggest convention of the year.

The commission is predicting 35,000 people will attend the October convocation, spend upwards of $36 million and occupy some 25,000 room nights — which places the convocation squarely on top of the St. Louis Business Journal’s list of the city’s largest 2011 conventions and group meetings. Room nights are the number of hotel rooms occupied by convention attendees, and are an indication of the value of the convention to the area.

The 2011 convention will be the second of a three-year commitment by the Church of God in Christ, which is the largest African-American Pentecostal denomination in America, made to holding their convocation in St. Louis. Some estimates place the attendance for the 2010 convocation in the 40,000 range. The Church of God in Christ is the fourth largest Protestant religious denomination in the United States, with churches in 60 countries worldwide and an estimated membership above 6.5 million members.
