Besides the Xs and Os on the chalkboard, former NFL player, coach and NBC football analyst Tony Dungy is also known for counseling and supporting athletes, most famously Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, following his release from prison and return to the football field.

So it probably isn’t a stretch that Dungy and his wife, Lauren, have co-authored a children’s book that provides lessons about inclusion and friendship.

“You Can Be a Friend,” intended for ages four to seven, is easy for children and parents to read together and teaches kids what it means to be a good friend.

The plot is about a girl named Jade (named after one of the Dungys’ children), who is planning a birthday party at a water park, but her new friend, Hannah, is in a wheelchair. Jade must decide whether it is more important to keep the celebration where she planned or to make sure all her friends will have fun.

The Dungys are active members of a number of faith- and community-based organizations, including All Pro Dad, iMom, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Mentors for Life, Family First, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the Boys and Girls Club of America.
