When ice is in the forecast there are several things you can do to stay safe during the storm. Here are 10 tips to keep you safe, warm and alive during the ice storm. 10 ice storm tips:

1. Stay warm, safely. If you you have one, use a generator. If not, fireplaces, wood-burning stovesand pellet stoves are alternatives, but it’s important to know if the exhaust vent for those is clear to make sure dangerous fumes leave the home.

2. If you have to drive, have an emergency kit with food, water, blankets and other supplies with you.

3. Commuters should pack a bag just in case they become stranded and need to stay in a hotel or with family or friends.

4. Have water on hand, not only for drinking, but also for bathing and operating the toilet.

5. Keep the cell phone charged. Use your car if necessary.

6. Have a battery-power radio at hand for local news updates that may not be available if the electricity is out.

7. Get a flashlight or candles, but be careful with open flames.

8. Have a good supply of batteries of all kinds to power devices you may need.

9. Internet will most likely go out without electricity. If you need it during the storm, it may be necessary to buy a 3G or 4G wireless card.

10. Check with you insurance agent. They may be able to provide additional instructions regarding your home or business.
